Lake Effect Country Needs a Different Kind of Truck Repair
Erie gets over 100 inches of snow in an average winter. That number changes everything about how commercial trucks operate here and what breaks. Fuel gelling, DEF freezing, dead batteries, air brake freeze ups, and salt corrosion on every exposed component. These are not occasional problems in this market. They are the baseline from November through March. And when a truck goes down in a lake effect event, it needs to be fixed right there, because nothing is moving easily until the roads get cleared.
Our mobile truck service operates year round on the I-90 corridor and throughout the Erie area. We carry winter specific supplies and parts because in this market, winter readiness is not seasonal prep. It is standard operating procedure.

Winter Emergency Service

Fuel gelling is the most common winter call. Below about 10 degrees, untreated diesel starts to solidify. We carry fuel filters, anti-gel additives, and fuel system priming equipment.
DEF freezing at 12 degrees causes aftertreatment faults and derate. The DEF tanks, lines, and injectors on modern trucks were not designed for Erie level sustained cold.
Dead batteries are a daily event in cold weather. Diesel engines need significantly more cranking power when cold, and a battery that was marginal in fall will not make it through January.
Air system freeze-up from moisture freezing in brake valves and lines. The truck may show full air pressure but the brakes will not release. We carry air dryer cartridges and air line antifreeze.
No heat. A heater core failure or coolant loss in an Erie winter is a safety emergency, not a comfort issue.
Diesel Engine Service

We carry factory diagnostic tools for Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Paccar, International, and Volvo. The DPF regeneration problems that every market deals with are worse in Erie because cold weather makes regen even harder. The exhaust system has to reach high temperature to burn soot, and when the ambient is below zero, it takes longer to get there. Trucks that regenerate adequately in summer fail to regen in winter.
Turbocharger stress from temperature extremes is another Erie specific issue. Cold start thermal shock in winter and sustained high temperature operation in summer both accelerate turbo bearing wear and housing cracking.
Brake Service and Salt Corrosion

Pennsylvania road salt is aggressive. Brake hardware corrodes faster here than in most markets. Adjusters seize, chambers rust, drums and shoes wear unevenly from corrosion, and air lines develop leaks where salt spray accumulates around fittings. More frequent brake inspections are a necessity for trucks running Erie area roads in winter.
We handle adjustment, shoe and drum replacement, chamber repair, slack adjuster service, ABS diagnostics, and air system repair. PA State Police commercial enforcement runs on I-90 and I-79.
Cooling System Service
Cooling problems in Erie shift with the season. Summer overheating in traffic and on grades. Winter issues with thermostats stuck open allowing engines to run too cold, which affects combustion efficiency and DPF function. Heater core leaks from thermal cycling are a winter problem that leaves drivers without cab heat in dangerous conditions.
Fleet Maintenance
For fleets operating in the Erie area, scheduled PM at your facility keeps trucks running through the worst conditions. Winter prep is especially critical: battery testing, cooling system antifreeze concentration check, air dryer service, brake hardware inspection for corrosion, and fuel system treatment verification.
